Growing strong leaders and team champions in work, life and technology

Three Cups of Tea

Cunanan Leadership Speaker Series in the College of Business welcomed Greg Mortenson and his presentation entitled “Promoting Peace through Education” on 01-MAR-2010.  The majority of the crowd raised their hands when he asked if anyone had read his book Three Cups of Tea.  The focus of his discussion was that the key to peace in Afghanistan and Pakistan is education, especially for girls. Mortenson advises the U.S. military on how to interact with the people of Afghanistan….and our military is starting to do this by meeting with the elders of their communities.  The Taliban takes their youth, away from the elders, and makes them into violent militants.  Mortenson told the crowd that with education for elders and youth, this process can stop.

An African proverb that Mortenson learned as a child while in Tanzania:  “If you educate a boy, you educate an individual.  But if you educate a girl, you educate a community.” Education of the community will allow all, especially mothers, to keep their children from falling into Taliban hands.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” – Nelson Mandela

Often we take for granted the many education opportunities we have in the U.S.  Students must embrace their education with open arms and take advantage of every opportunity to learn.  Mortenson also stressed that, unlike many cultures, the U.S. does not value the wisdom and experience of its elders as it should.  This ECU Engineering Project Management course provides students with the opportunity to learn from their elders:  all course faculty with a wealth of experience and knowledge.
