ECU selected to receive 2010 Freedom Award
East Carolina University has been selected to receive the 2010 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award from a pool of over 2500 applicants! ECU is the second academic institution in the country to be selected for this award, and the first in North Carolina, since the award’s inception in 1996.
This award to East Carolina University stems from the nomination of Dr. P J Schenarts (Brody School of Medicine and LTC in the US Army) and the leadership of Dr. Steve Duncan, ECU Director of Military Programs and ECU Chancellor Steve Ballard.
During his time as Provost of East Carolina University, Dr. William Swart established the Office of Military Programs and initiated the development of the ECU Engineering program, gaining program proposal approval from the UNC Board of Governors. For the Office of Military Programs, Dr. Swart wooed Dr. Steve Duncan to East Carolina University in 2003. Since that time, Dr. Duncan has led and/or facilitated the many solid ventures in research, employee support and ROTC program development at East Carolina University as Director of Military Programs with the steadfast support of Chancellor Steve Ballard.
Dr. Duncan is also Assistant Vice Chancellor for Operations, Planning and Program Development as well as Professor in the College of Education at ECU. He has extensive experience, including working with the Department of Defense and the U.S. Army, leading training centers for these organizations for many years. The Military Programs Committee here at ECU, led by Dr. Steve Duncan, has also been supported by leadership speakers Len Kulik and Colonel Worth Carter.
