on Women in Combat
Today, ECU presented its first Cunanan Leadership Speaker Series of the 2010-2011 academic year: nationally renowned author Laura Browder. A Book TV interview with the author can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHYWUsnG-zI . Information on her book and upcoming film When Janey Comes Marching Home can be found here: http://janeycomeshome.com/index.html . As the military is a male dominated field, Browder mentioned women often feel that they must work at least 2X as hard and must prove themselves over and over again; a fat, lazy male marine can get by, but not a female. Based on her interviews of 50 women, Browder discussed many other issues including both leaving family for deployment as well as leaving their unit to go home – both being extremely difficult for female military personnel. Over 230,000 women have deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, Sailors are serving and sacrificing for our country, regardless of gender.
